Pssst...birders, whale watchers and wildlife seekers! We can customize a charter to your liking, but almost all of our charters involve a 3-hour trip, at $120 per person, to circumnavigate the island of St. Lazaria. (If you are traveling alone or with a companion, please contact us for pricing. We have had to implement a $300 minimum to conduct a charter.)
St. Lazaria Island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, encompasses 65 acres and is about 15 miles west of town. It is called home by thousands of nesting marine birds, including puffins, murres, cormorants, storm-petrels, gulls, oystercatchers, guillemots, murrelets and auklets.
To and from St Lazaria Island, we look for whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, bald eagles and bears. A few lucky people see orcas each summer!
Though we run morning and afternoon charters, most of our wildlife charters depart in the late afternoon, between 4 pm and 5 pm, as there is ample daylight for viewing and the ocean is usually calmer in the evenings.
